The main campus of the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA) is situated in the city of Lavras, Minas Gerais. Established in 1908 as the Agricultural School of Lavras, it was renamed the Higher School of Agriculture of Lavras (ESAL) in 1938. Federalization occurred in 1963, and in 1994, the institution attained university status. Additionally, in September 2021, the new UFLA campus was inaugurated in São Sebastião do Paraíso.
The main campus provides extensive support infrastructure, including a university restaurant, snack bars, a community center, a university integration center equipped with facilities for sports and leisure, a convention center, a bank, a radio station linked to the educational system, a printing press, and a bookstore.
UFLA stands out on the national stage due to the quality of education it imparts to its students, who, as the primary reason for the institution's existence, have over the years become significant contributors to the recognized excellence of the University.
The city of Lavras is situated at the confluence of the southern and western regions of Minas Gerais, at an average altitude of 900 meters, with an approximate population of 90,000 inhabitants. Apart from offering excellent climatic conditions, the city possesses all the essential resources of a modern urban center. It boasts fine hotels, a hospital network, commercial outlets, shopping centers, and numerous social and sports clubs.
Lavras is located 230 km from Belo Horizonte, 370 km from São Paulo, and 420 km from Rio de Janeiro, in proximity to the circuit of water sources and the historic cities of Minas Gerais.
The agricultural production encompasses various crops, notably coffee, and hosts one of the state's finest dairy cattle herds. The industrial sector is experiencing growth owing to the favorable conditions available in the city. As recreational spots, the Quedas do Rio Bonito Forest Park, Funil Hydroelectric Plant, Campestre Club, Lavras Tennis Club, Camargos Yacht Club, and Itutinga Plant are prominent. Additionally, the Municipal Theater (former railway station), the Church of Rosario, and the Bi Moreira Museum serve as historical attractions, while the Crafts Fair held on Sundays in the city's main square is noteworthy.
